Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
Canada is a preferred travel destination for visitors from visa-exempt countries due to its safety, cultural diversity, and high quality of life. To enhance border security and streamline entry, Canada requires eligible foreign nationals to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before flying to Canada.
An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport and allows short-term visits for tourism, business, or transit purposes.
Why Apply for a Canada eTA?
The eTA is a fast and convenient entry requirement for travellers from visa-exempt countries who are visiting Canada by air. It allows individuals to travel to Canada multiple times without applying for a traditional visitor visa.
An approved eTA generally allows:
- Short-term visits for tourism
- Business travel or meetings
- Transit through Canada
- Stays of up to six months per visit
An eTA is usually valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
Who Needs an eTA?
An eTA is required for:
- Citizens of visa-exempt countries travelling to Canada by air
- Individuals transiting through a Canadian airport
U.S. citizens do not require an eTA, but U.S. permanent residents do.
How It Works:
Eligibility Assessment:
Applicants must confirm that they are from an eTA-eligible country and meet basic entry requirements, including holding a valid passport and having no serious criminal or medical inadmissibility.
Online Application Submission:
The eTA application is submitted online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) system using passport details, travel information, and background questions.
Application Review:
Most eTA applications are approved within minutes; however, some cases may require additional review or supporting documents.
Decision and Authorization:
Once approved, the eTA is electronically linked to the applicant’s passport. No physical document is issued.
